Northbound

A multi-sequential story created in Dr. Janet Murray's PeNLab Project studio. Interactors play as Clara, a young Honduran mother, leaving her home as a local gang member threatens to kill her. During her journey, she is forced to make difficult decisions to save her and her four-year-old son's life

Research question

How can interaction design for emerging computational technologies allow us to create, experience, and share more complex forms of storytelling?

Play the prototype

Play as Clara today.

Project duration

January - May 2021

Background

Project Studio course with Georgia Tech’s PeNLab Studio instructed by Dr. Janet Murray.

Role

Creator, researcher, writer, illustrator

Tools

Illustration, Illustrator, Photoshop, Timeline Authoring System

Objective

Utilize timeline authoring system for creating stories that allow interactors to explore scenarios with multiple variables in order to get a fuller understanding of a complex situation.

Storyboarding

Pink stickies are key beats in the story. Green stickies are choices. The blue stickies following the green represent the details of the story based on the choice. . Yellow stickies are visual design suggestions to represent the key piece of the story

Timeline authoring system

Structures stories as a series of dramatic beats that vary according to three sets of variables. In Northbound, interactors three dramatic beats to choose between are:

  1. Travel alone OR together

  2. Continue to travel while ill OR rest

  3. Help others OR help self
